1997年，撤销宜宾地区和县级宜宾市，设立地级宜宾市和翠屏区。2009年，成立四川宜宾临港经济开发区，白沙湾街道划归临港经济开发区。2018年，撤销宜宾县，设立宜宾市叙州区。原宜宾县孔滩镇、王场镇、白花镇、永兴镇、双谊镇划入翠屏区。翠屏区南岸街道、赵场街道、南广镇划归叙州区。
